At Liberation Sanctuary, our rescued animals have a safe home for life. But keeping that home healthy and providing enough food for everyone is an ongoing responsibility; and, this past winter has brought an especially difficult challenge.
After months of relentless rain, almost half of our paddocks have turned into mud, leaving very little grass for the animals. We’ve had to rely much more heavily on hay to keep everyone well fed.
We need your help to buy more hay.
Every day, our rescued animals are doing what they do best: being themselves.
Betty is still running around with her family. Sir Bruce is still getting himself thoroughly involved in the mud. Our sheep, goats, alpacas and deer gather round when the hay arrives. And our cows are still doing what cows do best – joyously eating!
These are the moments that remind us why we do what we do.
But behind those happy faces, our sanctuary has been working through an exceptionally difficult winter. With so little grass available, we’ve had to purchase much more hay than usual to keep everyone fed.
And even though winter is over, our paddocks won’t recover overnight.
Liberation Sanctuary is a home for rescued animals, not a temporary stop. Once an animal arrives, our commitment to their care continues throughout their life.
That means making sure everyone has enough food, clean water, veterinary care, shelter and safe spaces to live.
When the paddocks are healthy, they provide a good amount of grazing our animals need. But when months of rain leave the ground saturated, creating mud pits with no grass in sight, we have to find other ways to keep everyone fed.
Right now, that means buying extra hay while the grass returns.
It also means beginning the work of restoring the areas that have taken the biggest hit, so they can once again provide healthy pasture for our animal family.
Through our Buy a Bale fundraiser your donation will help us keep our animals well fed while their sanctuary home gets back on its feet.
Every contribution makes a difference.

If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to care for rescued animals for life, this winter has made the answer especially clear: it takes a community.
It takes people who care about animals, people who understand that sanctuary is a commitment, and people who are willing to help when unexpected challenges arise.
Right now, our animals need that support.

Percy was only hours old when a kind couple spotted her on the side of the Nullarbor Highway, more than eight hours west of Adelaide. She still had her umbilical cord attached.
Liberation Sanctuary is Australia's longest running farm animal sanctuary, home to over 140 rescued animals. Sadly, we have been facing severe rainfall deficiencies, and we are recovering from one of the most brutal summers in memory. The grass is gone. The dams are drying.
