Volunteer

There are many ways to volunteer at Liberation Sanctuary. If you're looking for a rewarding experience helping animals, read on to discover the different ways you can contribute.

Liberation Sanctuary is a loving home and place of refuge for abused, neglected, exploited and/or homeless animals. All animals who find their way here are family members and treated with love, respect and dignity at all times.

The sanctuary is an hour and 30 minute drive from central Melbourne, near the town of Warragul.

Note: Please be considerate of the animals when packing your lunch – do not include any animal products such as meat, dairy and eggs.

Monthly Working Bees

Each month we have a large working bee at the sanctuary. Tasks can vary from regular daily tasks to special projects like deep cleaning of animal housing, clearing fallen branches after a storm, enriching animal environments, and of course, hanging out with the animals.

Additionally If you are interested in becoming a regular volunteer, coming to a working bee can be a great first step to find out more about the sanctuary and the work involved.

Regular volunteer

If you can commit to a day once a fortnight (or more frequently) you can apply to become a regular volunteer. Daily tasks can include animal feeds, cleaning of animal houses and paddocks, animal care and miscellaneous tasks necessary to keep the sanctuary running. Regular volunteers will receive training in all aspects of animal care they are involved with.

Student Placement

If you are a tertiary student completing a qualification relevant to Community Development and are seeking a placement opportunity, we would love to hear from you. We are dedicated to fostering thriving and inclusive communities through community engagement, public education, and advocacy—initiatives that address the interconnected issues affecting people, animals, and the environment, while centering our core values and the wellbeing of the animals in our care. Please refer to our Community Development section for more information.

PLEASE NOTE

An important distinction between volunteer work and student placements:
Student placements, while unpaid and often a mandatory part of vocational training or education, are not technically considered volunteer work. This is because student placements are formal arrangements between an educational institution and a host organisation, designed to fulfill course requirements and provide structured, supervised learning. Unlike volunteering, which is done freely without obligation, student placements are a necessary part of completing a qualification and focus on skill development rather than altruistic service.
