Little Yewie, one of the newest and most dearly loved members of the Liberation Sanctuary family, is a beautiful symbol of vulnerability and extraordinary resilience. Her incredible journey began in the midwinter of 2025 following a terrifying, life-threatening ordeal.
Yewie was found alone and severely injured north of Melbourne, the victim of a brutal attack where dogs were biting at her face. Due to her isolation, we believe her mother was tragically killed, likely a casualty of local hunting activity. Her life was saved by a kind-hearted person who bravely rescued her from the dogs and immediately rushed her to a veterinarian. Thanks to a wonderful friend of Liberation Sanctuary, she was ensured a safe, permanent home right here with us.
We named Yewie in memory of Jamie Yew, beloved friend of the sanctuary and lifelong animal activist who helped rescue many of the animals who call Liberation Sanctuary home. Jamie never got to meet Yewie, but she felt great joy and was deeply touched when she learned we had named Little Yewie in her honour. We believe that the beautiful legacy of love and activism that Jamie left behind will forever be woven into Yewie’s own journey at Liberation Sanctuary.

When she first arrived, Yewie was fragile and we bottle-fed her for several months, nurturing her until she was strong and robust enough to join the main herd in the deer and goat paddock. After a slightly shaky start – especially with our elder, slightly bossy female deer, Nova – Yewie has now been wholeheartedly accepted as part of the tribe.
Kang, an elder deer who has officially and lovingly adopted little Yewie, is now her dearest companion. The sweet, small deer is thriving and loves displaying her affection, often sharing gentle kisses and soft nose-to-nose greetings with her dedicated caregivers.
Yewie is safe now, enveloped in love, but her essential care – including providing a secure environment, nutritious food, and necessary veterinary attention – is ongoing.
Your monthly support will directly ensure Yewie continues to thrive with her adopted family, receiving the protection, peace, and loving nose kisses she deserves. You will be extending the circle of compassion that was first started by Jamie Yew.
By sponsoring Yewie you will also contribute towards projects that beautifully honour Jamie’s memory, such as the Jamie Yew Path of Peace in Liberation Forest, a haven for rescued wildlife.
You will receive a digital gift certificate and PDF story within 48 hours of sponsoring Yewie.
Please, donate today to help us keep Yewie’s promise of freedom alive.
