An unexpected, joyful addition of a calf to our family

Okie (Oklahoma)

How I got my name: Alabama had such a beautiful name that we decided to carry her legacy into the next generation of “Southern Charm” by naming her brave boy Okie, after Oklahoma.

Arrived: June 2024

Birthday: June 21, 2024

Favourite Snack: Molasses chaff

Quirky habit/Superpower: Resilience. Despite a rocky start, Okie has grown into a strong, confident, and joyful soul who makes friends with everyone he meets.

A Welcome Surprise

Okie’s story began with a miracle. His mother, Alabama, was a gentle 16-year-old matriarch with partial vision who was rescued from a horrible fate just in time to surprise us and give birth to baby Okie in the safety of the sanctuary.

His start was a fragile one. Born in the middle of winter, Okie was too weak to nurse, and for hours, his life hung in the balance. It was then that a truly extraordinary moment occurred. As Patty, the sanctuary founder, kept vigil in the dark paddock to nurse the calf, Alabama approached her.

Despite everything she had endured in her past, this gentle and vulnerable mum chose to put her trust in a human to save her baby. She slowly lowered her head and rested it directly in Patty’s lap. It was a silent, powerful plea: a mother asking for help to save her child.

Okie’s Promise

Inspired by that raw moment of trust, the team fought round-the-clock to save him. Today, Okie is a thriving, happy boy who has reached every milestone with ease. As he grows, he carries a special promise: to live the life that was denied to so many before him. He is the heartbeat of the paddock, known for his curious nature and his love for a good snack. Every day Okie spends grazing in the sun is a victory, a life lived in total peace and friendship.

A Legacy of Love

Alabama’s greatest gift was ensuring Okie would never know the hardships she once endured. She spent her final two years at the sanctuary watching him grow, enjoying the freedom of the pastures with her son always by her side until she passed away peacefully in February 2026.

By sponsoring Okie, you are helping us keep Alabama’s promise. You are ensuring that Okie continues to thrive, safe and protected for the rest of his long life, just as his mother fought for him to do.
