A place in the sun

Found cold, alone and stressed on the floor of a chicken slaughterhouse, a battery hen was rescued and eventually found her way to Liberation Sanctuary.

She was renamed Mississippi, renowned as the birthplace of the Blues, as this beautiful hen still struggles around others of her own kind, a response to the trauma she experienced in close confinement.

However, Mississippi has found her joy in the most natural of places – spending time in the sun. She loves stretching out her wings to maximise the sunlight falling on her frail body. It’s amazing to observe how quickly battery hens start expressing these natural behaviours after a lifetime in captivity.

It shouldn’t be too long before Mississippi’s feathers regrow, and hopefully her anxiety will reduce in time. With the love and care of the Liberation Sanctuary team, she will recover and thrive.
