Betty

Born "useless" to the dairy industry, Betty was left in the freezing cold at just a few days old.

Betty was found in the middle of winter, just a few days old, huddled alone beside the ramp of a transport truck. She had no shelter, was soaking wet and freezing cold.

She was rescued alongside another tiny calf named Bill, who had also been found in a similar condition. They were bottle-fed and grew up in our special care paddock until they were big enough to join the rest of the herd in the valley.

We later found out that Betty had been destined to be killed because she was born with an extra teat. In the dairy industry, that meant she couldn’t be connected to the milking machines, making her “useless” to the industry.

Today, she’s one of the biggest personalities in our sanctuary family. Happy, cheeky and full of life.

Betty got a second chance. Millions of calves born into the dairy industry never will.
