We took in Alabama, a 12 year old vision impaired cow, as her farm was closing and they didn’t want to send her to the slaughterhouse. They had bottle-raised the semi blind calf but she was still used for breeding. We warmly welcomed this sweet, but “greedy” old girl into our special needs paddock. Right away she shooed our other blind cows away from the feed bowl. We had NO idea she was expecting!
Out of the blue her beautiful baby arrived – Oklahoma (Oke’ for short). All went well except by evening, bubs was still not nursing and so an emergency vet was called. Patty Mark (founder/manager) sat with mother and newborn for 90 minutes until vet arrived. We thought we lost him 2 times… all of a sudden Alabama came and sat right at Patty’s feet and laid her gigantic beautiful head into her lap and there she stayed for half an hour.
The vet was awesome, she proceeded to milk mum and teach Noah (volunteer coordinator) how to tube feed, which continued throughout the weekend until the little baby finally started to suckle on Monday morning!
Alabama is the most loving and protective mum, never leaving her baby’s presence. And now she’ll be with her baby til the end. To break the mother/child bond for something so trivial as another species’ milk in our coffee or a cow’s milk cheese toastie causes immeasurable pain and suffering.
Open your heart and let this beauty of nature take its course – a proud mother loving her newborn, just like we love ours. Fellow Earthlings all wanting their lives to live.
